Last week, we launched our new project, "Big World, Little Library." In this project we will learn about literacy and the importance of access to books. We will support access to literature in our community by creating a little library. This class of enthusiastic readers will enjoy sharing their love of books with others and I am so excited to have the opportunity to share this project with them! Please visit our project website page to learn more details about our project. Here are some highlights from our launch:

Below is a conversation we had surrounding Rain School and our pending fieldwork to the library. Students are fired up and eager to help others who do not have the same resources. I am so proud of their engagement and thrilled to see where this project will take us! What if we didn’t have as many books at HTeNC as we do, like the Rain School?
“If a school didn’t have as many books, people would be fighting because they would always want that book.” - Jake “If you don’t have as many books, you would have to reread the same book over and over again and never learn anything new.” - Spencer “We wouldn’t learn as much. We wouldn’t know about as other places.” - Spencer “We wouldn’t know about other animals.” - Emma “If we didn’t have books, we couldn’t read.” - Mazy If there are no books at school, and there are no books at school, then what could we do? “We could go to Barnes and Noble.” “We could go to a garage sale.” - Jolie “A book fair” - Isabela “We could borrow books from other schools.” “We could ask a principal to visit their school to borrow books.” - Cooper “We could go to a library.” - Julieta What is the difference between those different ideas? “Some cost money and some don’t.” Which do you think would work better in Chad? “They could go to a library because there is almost a library in every single town.” - Jake “But the libraries might be spread far apart.” - Cooper “People might be embarrassed to ask for books.” - Jackelyn Why do you think people would feel embarrassed to ask for books? “People might be embarrassed to ask for books if they don’t know the person they’re asking.” - Julieta “Walking up to a random stranger could be embarrassing.” - Mazy “They could feel sad.” - Jackelyn Why would we be visiting a library? “We don’t know how other people could get books. We’re going to the library to learn how other people get books.” - Mazy In the next post, you can read more about our fieldwork to the library, our trip to the Oceanside Preschool, and other research to help guide our project.
