What a wonderful way to start the year. I was struck by their unique contributions to activities and conversations throughout the week. It is evident that each child in this class has so much to contribute. They display such empathy and kindness towards one another, take great pride and ownership of their learning, and are eager and engaged in our learning experiences.
I want to take a moment to appreciate the families for instilling your children with such wonderful core values, and the amazing first grade team (Larsen, Jones, Rahn) for preparing these students so well for second grade! Here are some highlights from this week: - Building reading stamina: We are working toward our goal of reading independently without standing up or talking with our friends for 25 minutes! We are well on our way with 7 minutes and 31 seconds. This means that all students were actively engaged in a book, while demonstrating strong reading practices (ex: choosing a quiet space to read, good reading postures, tracking with finger, making text-to-self connections while reading). We will continue to build stamina as we establish our Daily 5 literacy block. - Personal writing journal: Students were thrilled to receive their very own composition notebooks for writing! We started by writing a reflection about our day. Students will continue to write in their journals at least one time each day. - Chromebooks: In addition to journals, they were so excited for our laptop exploration! They took such great care of the very special classroom materials and made good choices while working with the computers. Students have now activated their Gmail accounts (email addresses and passwords will go home soon). Each child needs a Gmail account given to them by the school in order to access a Chromebook. Students will not be emailing with these. - ST Math: Students have now activated their second grade ST math account. Please let me know if there are any questions about logging in at home. Their passwords are the same as last year. I've just enabled "at home" practice of a few skills that they can work on at home if they'd like. - Oscar the Octopus: As you may have heard, we have a large stuffed animal joining us for reading this year. The students are eager to start reading with Oscar the Octopus, and I've assured them that he is equally as eager. As a class, we established Oscar norms that will keep us safe and focused as we read. Above are some pictures from our first reading time with Oscar! - Hopes and Dreams: We have started setting goals for ourselves and our class for this year. This week, each student established at least one goal for something they want to learn or improve upon this year in second grade. These will be up for you to see at Back-to-School night.
